Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic plant essences called Essential oils to help restore balance to our Body, Mind and Spirit. Essential oils are highly fragrant, volatile (quickly evaporating) fluids that occur naturally in aromatic plants growing all over the world. They can be produced from flowers, leaves, seeds, roots, fruits and woods, depending on the plant, and are extracted in a variety of ways.

At Indigo Holistics, organic and naturally expressed oils are used when possible, from companies approved by the ATC (the UK authoritative body for the Aromatherapy Essential Oil Trade who abide by the Trading Standards' Regulations) and solvent extracted, low grade, adulterated and synthetic oils are avoided. There are over 40 oils to choose from, many of which possess anti-bacterial, antimicrobial and antiseptic properties.

Essential oils need to be blended with a plant oil (such as Sunflower, Apricot, Macadamia, Olive oil) so they can be used safely on the skin; they are so powerful and potent that they should never be used undiluted, or taken internally and need to be kept out of the reach of children.

Aromatherapy is suitable for people of all ages and following the 1st 12 weeks of pregnancy; some essential oils must be strictly avoided throughout pregnancy, if you are epileptic, have high blood pressure or sensitive skin. It is always advisable to seek the guidance of a professional aromatherapist. You can email me

Aromatherapy's title reflects the medium through which this therapy is said to work - Aroma! When we smell the oil, the therapeutic chemicals are inhaled through our nasal passages where they reach our brain (our emotional centre); from there they are said to enter the bloodstream where they perform their actions on the body. When used in massage, the oils are applied (in a diluted form) directly to the skin from where they are absorbed into the bloodstream and undertake their action from there.

Essential oils can be blended to soothe, uplift, energise, relax or stimulate. The aroma of the oils can help calm the mind and relax us, allowing us to face life’s challenges with a renewed sense of balance. Under exemption from the Medicines Act s12(1), I can only discuss therapeutic properties of essential oils with the client in person, following a full consultation.

* Aromatherapy should never be regarded as an alternative to orthodox medical treatment, but should rather complement it. If you are receiving treatment or medication from your doctor, it may be necessary to check with your GP before having a treatment. Please make the practitioner aware of all relevant medical history, any medication you may be taking and alert her to any allergies you have. In general, Aromatherapy and the use of Essential oils is best avoided during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The therapist cannot diagnose or treat illnesses of any kind. Oils should never be applied to any part of the skin unless diluted first, and they should never be taken internally.
