Traditional Thai
Yoga Massage
This massage works on releasing blockages along the body’s
system of ‘Sen’ lines, through which our energy is said to
move. Pressure point and Thai massage techniques along with
Hatha Yoga asanas combine to create this flowing, dynamic
and meditative therapy, assisting the body in it’s natural
tendency towards self-balance. Surprisingly relaxing,
suitable for limber or stiff bodies and during pregnancy*

Traditional Thai Yoga Massage works on a subtle energy line
system in the body (the Ten Sen) through which our energy
is said to be distributed, transformed and used by the
body; by stimulating specific energy points along these
lines, the aim is to allow free flow of our energy (Prana,
Chi or Ki) throughout our body. This massage differs from
Western massage not only in technique and method but also
in that the client receives the massage fully clothed on a
mat on the floor.
The aim of Thai Yoga Massage is to release toxins and waste
materials from the joints, muscles and connective tissue,
and to stimulate the internal organs by gentle pressure on
specific energy points. Starting with the client's feet,
pressure point massage, from the therapist's thumb, palm,
elbow, knee and foot, along these energy lines and at
specfic energy points, as well as mobilisation of the
client's joints with passive stretches, all combine to
unravel muscular knots and tensions in the body; helping to
improve joint mobility, stimulate lymph flow and
detoxification and encouraging blood flow and cellular
oxygenation.
Traditional Thai Yoga Massage helps to improve circulation,
release muscle tension, increase joint flexibility, assist
posture and alignment, relieve tension and spasm, expediate
metabolism, boost the immune system and helps to balance
the body energetically thus inducing calmness.
This therapy has been described as a type of assisted Hatha
yoga. Careful attention is given to the recipient's level
of flexibility and breath as they gently move the
individual into different poses, with the therapist's body
weight gently used to assist in stretches; the pressure of
the point work and the depth of stretch are constantly
assessed, so as not to cause discomfort in any way.
This massage therapy also promotes the release of
endorphins in the body, further promoting relaxation. By
working the body physically and energetically, Thai Yoga
massage produces a highly therapeutic effect that can help
to relieve common conditions such as low back pain,
arthritis, headaches, digestive, menstrual and menopausal
problems and stress-related conditions, as well as
providing an overall sense of relaxation which helps one to
deal better with emotional issues.
Traditional Thai Yoga Massage can be traced back to India
at least 3,000 years ago (the origins of some of the Yogic
exercises and stretches used in the treatment) and then
onto Thailand, where it was practised by the monks at the
great Wat’s or temples, alongside herbal medicine and
spiritual practises. To this day great stone reliefs stand
in the temple of Wat Po, showing detailed drawings of the
body's Shen lines. Thai medicine is based on the belief
there is an intrinsic life force or energy (prana) that
circulates within the body. To create health and vitality,
it is essential to allow this energy to circulate freely.
When prana is blocked or restricted, sickness or disease
results which can manifest physically or emotionally.
Thai Yoga Massage is said to exemplify the four Divine
states of Mind described in Buddhist teachings: Loving
Kindness, Compassion, Vicarious Joy and Equanimity.
Traditionally taught and practised with the aim of
embodying these states in action, it is often referred to
as ‘Meditation in Movement’ or the ‘Art of Loving
Kindness’. For the therapist, the massage is also a
meditative practise.
A course of treatments might be advised to fully facilitate
rebalance.

" A Thai massage can last for up to two hours and clients
are advised to wear loose, comfortable clothes. Thai
massage helps to relieve tension within the body and can be
effectively used for pain relief. It improves the function
of the lymph glands and blood circulation, balances the
nervous system and clears out blocked and stagnant energy.
It is appropriate for a range of musculoskeletal problems
including back, neck, shoulder, hip and leg pain. This form
of massage is especially good for releasing stress and
tension, and encouraging relaxation of both mind and body.
Clients report that Thai massage is wonderfully soothing
and relaxing and leaves them feeling energised, refreshed
and with a deep sense of well-being."
