Hopi Ear
Candling
The longest
tradition of ear candling comes from the Hopi people in
North America, hence the name Hopi Ear Candling.
Also known as Thermo-Auricular therapy, it is said to be
helpful for excessive wax congestion, sinusitis, rhinitis,
tinnitus, vertigo, excessive flying or diving, swimmers
ear, snoring and glue ear, as well as being a very relaxing
therapy in it’s own right.

Quite
different from conventional wax candles, a Hopi ear candle
is actually a cotton tube impregnated with beeswax, honey
and therapeutic oils, that is painlessly inserted into the
ear and lit at one end, helping to gently draw out
impurities and gently relieving pressure in the head and
sinuses. Biosun Hopi Ear candles are
used in my treatments; they are made from natural
organic ingredients - pure beeswax, honey extract and
herbs such as Sage, St John's wort and Chamomile.
Otherwise known as Thermo-Auricular therapy, the
original source of the technique seems to be from
ceremonies performed by the Medicine Men of the native
American Indian tribe known by the colonists as Hopi.
The Magic of fire has fascinated people from the very
beginning of time and control of this element gave light
and warmth. Historical roots of Ear Candling can be found
among the people of the Siberian praries, Asia and the
native North and South American Indians. It is very much an
ancient therapy stretching back for centuries when folk
healers all over the world used the therapy in some form or
another; Chinese, Egyptians, Tibetans, Maya, Aztec and
American Indian cultures especially the Hopi Indians of
North America and Choctaw Indians show evidence of blowing
smoke of various herbs through the ears to help well-being.
Ear-candles have purely physical function, although the
treatment can be very relaxing and soothing. A light
suction action (chimmney effect) and the movement of the
flame create a vibration of air in the Earcandle,
generating a massage-like effect on the eardrum. This
induces a pleasant feeling of warmth and a balance of
pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses. It is soothing
and said to be helpful for earache and headache, ear noise,
stress and nervousness. The treatment is said to sometimes
also spontaneously cause freer nasal breathing and an
improved sense of smell, even when the nose was blocked
before treatment. BIOSUN does not
recommend using these earcandles if you have a
perforated eardrum, if grommets have already been fitted
and are still in place inside the ear, if there is
inflammation inside the ear, if the client has a
cochlear implant, or the client is on prescribed
medication from their doctor. Biosun earcandles are safe
to use during pregnancy (but not recommended during the
first 3 months).
"Fully dressed the client lies down on their side, with
their head supported on a pillow so the auditory canal is
vertical. The candle is then lit and the non-burning end is
placed gently into the outer ear passage and is turned
lightly to seal it in place. The candle then generates a
pleasant crackling sound and a warm, comfortable feeling
while it draws out the impurities from the ear. After
around 10 minutes the process is repeated on the other ear.
Users of Hopi ear candles have reported success in treating
balance and inner ear problems, build up of wax, ringing in
the ears, tinnitus, hearing difficulties and sinus problems
as well as colds, ‘flu, sore throats, stress, headaches and
migraines. The treatment is suitable for children and is a
good alternative for those who don't enjoy
syringing." The Embody guide to Hopi Ear
Candling
* Hopi ear candles should not be used if there is any
inflammation or infection in the ear and are not suitable
for people who have had recent ear surgery, or those with
ear grommets or tubes, perforated ear drums, or allergies
to any of the products in the candle. The should also be
avoided during the first 3 months of pregnancy. Anyone who
is receiving medical treatment for any ear condition should
always consult their doctor first. Hopi Ear Candling should
never be regarded as an alternative to orthodox medical
treatment, but should rather complement it. The therapist
cannot and will not diagnose or treat illnesses of any
kind.
